Living in the Arabian Peninsula since 2010, HMN works between direct field studies and the studio, repeatedly returning to the desert. In arid landscapes, landforms constrain what can plausibly occur around them: where vegetation takes root, where a camp can stand, and where absence belongs. Changing a landform within a painting can therefore alter the logic of the place itself. Pictorial intervention is used with restraint, with each decision weighed against what was encountered.
Working on location allows her to live through the time of a place while painting it. As conditions change, what seemed clear at first is repeatedly questioned. The painting continues in the studio, where different lighting conditions can raise further questions, and uncertainties from the field are worked through in paint. When comparable conditions recur, she may return to test those decisions through direct observation. This sustained exchange keeps the paintings closely tied to the physical locations from which they developed.
